In our current culture, we are taught to distrust and even dislike our own bodies, to think of them almost as an enemy that is always about to fail or betray us in some way. We’re bombarded with messages that without constant, vigilant supervision our bodies will be too fat, too thin, not healthy enough, not attractive enough, and in constant danger of falling victim to infection, disease, pain and debilitating conditions. We are told that frequent visits to a doctor are normal and necessary, and that we need a pill for whatever ails us.
I’m writing today to share the idea that our bodies are actually a wonderful, miraculous expression of us – how we feeling about ourselves, what we believe to be “true” and possible for ourselves and our bodies – and that when our bodies are sick or hurting, they are not failing us but are expressing on the “outside” how we really feel about things on the inside. If we pay attention, we can use that information to change our ideas and heal.
If your ego is fearful and conflicted about moving forward into new ideas that may threaten your status quo and change your understanding the world, you may experience sore knees that make it hard to be flexible and move forward in physical life. If you are frustrated, unfulfilled and resentful in some aspect of your daily life, you might have a flair up of stiff, sore, inflamed joints that express how painful, difficult, torturous it is for you to move about in your current daily situation. Sore hips almost always express ambivalence and confusion about what, if anything, you have to move forward to in life. Heart attacks often express a life lived in fear and emotional isolation instead of love and connection. And guess what – you’re not run down and tired because you have a cold, you have a cold because you feel run down and tired!
Once we understand this principle, it becomes easier to be aware of what the symptoms are literally saying, on the ground, so to speak, and to make changes to the ideas, beliefs and behaviors that are causing them. We quickly learn to recognize when we’re feeling tired and run down, and start giving ourselves permission to have quiet and down time before it turns into a cold (we may even overhear ourselves wishing for a cold (!), catch ourselves in the act, and take the proactive steps to avert it).*
Your Body’s Original Template For Health and Vitality Is Still Available
If your body is already expressing a problem state, the good news is that your body’s original template for health and vitality is always right there, ready to be re-activated. A moderate amount of attention and intention can make a huge difference. Deciding to become more healthy and energetic and then starting to take hikes or bike rides can raise your energy level and feeling of health almost overnight: Just last week a client told me how silly she thought it sounded to be telling people that she was feeling way better and more healthy, even though she’d only just starting exercising and eating better 3 days before. I answered that all I have to do is add a salad to my diet for a couple days and I start dropping weight and looking more slender, so I get it. A friend had a joint condition come up that was so painful he could barely walk or move – I had to help him lift his legs to get into the car to go see the doctor/chiropractor – but after a 20 minute visit that included an adjustment, a quick back rub with essential oils, and non-life-threatening diagnosis, he was instantly energized and more flexible in his entire body. His level of vitality changed immediately and almost tangibly. Again, this in a mere 20 minutes’ time. As soon as you have a clear intention to be better, and take action that gives you permission to feel better, you will instantly start feeling better.
Intention and willingness to feel better are key.
You Can Help Your Body Heal Itself By Changing Just A Few Thought Patterns
And Attitudes
Your body’s natural tendency is toward health, not illness. It knows how to be healthy and it knows how to heal itself; we can help it by changing just a few thought patterns and attitudes:
First, instead of constantly finding fault with your body and telling it it’s doing something wrong or is about to, try loving, appreciating and enjoying it. Thank it for sticking with you so valiantly through all the upset, fear and negative expectation. Start thinking of it and treating it as your best friend and #1 fan: be kind and loving to it, give it what it needs, what makes it feel good. Trust it to take care of you. Think of it as Good.
When making changes to be more healthy, do what you do out of love, respect and kindness toward your body, not out of fear. If you hike, ride a bike or work out, do it because it feels good and right to your body to do so, not because you’re afraid of what might happen if you don’t. If you start eating more healthful foods, eat what you eat with the loving intention to give your body the nourishment and support it needs, not out of fear that if you don’t eat an exact certain diet your body will fall into ruin. Act out of love and nurture, not fear.
A Healing Infusion
Imagine a stream of golden universal vitality flowing through you, revitalizing and rejuvenating your entire body. Direct it to your lungs, your stomach and other organs; direct it your circulatory system. Allow your body to slip right into its true, authentic state of vitality and well-being. Feel the presence of that state. It feels different immediately, doesn’t it? You can give your body this infusion of universal health and vitality anytime, anywhere. And the more often you do it, the more your body will respond, like a flower to sun and water. It’s all about intention.
